Wine Rooted in Food
Our head Winemaker, Nelly Some, is first and foremost a chef, specializing for decades in the rich and diverse world of African and African-Inspired cuisine. Already having a passion for wine, and traveling all over the world, Nelly began to realize that it was quite hard to effectively pair many of her dishes with even her very favorite bottles. That is where the concept of Mvinyo Winery began!
Perfect Pairings that Remain Versatile
Nelly knew there was a need and demand for great wines that paired exceptionally well not only with African food, but also with other highly to moderately spicy foods, including many other ethnic foods (including Asian, Latin American, Indian and Middle Eastern). Her goal was to create wines that bring out the very best in these flavorful dishes, while still remaining an excellent choice for a broader range of the culinary spectrum, including herbaceous foods, red meat, white meat, poultry, lentils, and soft cheeses!
Grapes Lovingly Sourced from Across Washington
Once the mission was clear, Nelly and her team began the monumental task of choosing the very best grapes, with exploratory trips to South Africa, California, and beyond. What became apparent however, was that there wasn’t a need to travel beyond her home state of Washington. Washington is a truly exceptional wine region, providing astoundingly great grapes and an impressive breadth of varietals. Always the perfectionist, Nelly painstakingly and over the course of years, sought out only the very best vineyards in some of the great AVAs of Washington, including Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, Rattlesnake Hills, Yakima Valley, and the broader Columbia Valley….and paired these exceptional grapes with a perfectionist’s approach to Winemaking, with each vintage and varietal produced truly a labor of love!
